Polite Indians?
Written on April 22, 2007 by Sid
I remember the number of people who responded to a Readers Digest survey and conclusion that Mumbai is one of the rudest cities in the world. Most respondents were of the opinion that Indians were actually polite but didn’t really make themselves out to be so.
I beg to differ.
I’ve been consciously making observations on the subject and find that:
- the phrase ‘thank you’ is alien to most
- most never think of apologising for a mistake
- our road manners are atrocious
- being considerate is a very weak point
- we believe that laws are meant to be broken
there are more, but all in all, we are *not* a polite people, though some may cry themselves hoarse citing the age of our ‘civilisation’. I would even go on to state that I dont even think we are a civilised people. We have art and culture in plenty, but civility and manners - zilch.
